ALBION — A different year, the same result.

David City downed Creighton 10-1 in a Seniors division winner's bracket game Sunday evening at Leon Nelson Memorial Field here, thrusting Creighton into the loser's bracket.

Creighton was to face Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus on Monday at 2 p.m. in an elimination game after DCB eliminated host Albion earlier Sunday.

“They played like the team they are,” Creighton coach Russ Diedrichsen said about the defending Juniors and Seniors state champions. “They're a great baseball team, and they played great baseball tonight.”

Last year, David City defeated the Creighton Juniors for the state title.

“We're gifted with a lot of athletes, and they are all great baseball players,” first-year David City coach Matt Croghan said. “They come in with a chip on their shoulder, knowing they're going to get every team's best shot this whole tournament.”

David City used a consistent offense, scoring at least one run in all but the first and seventh innings. It coupled nine hits with 13 stolen bases.

Creighton needed five pitchers after starter Carson Lilly exited with arm soreness after hitting back-to-back batters and reaching 45 pitches in 2!-E innings. Levi Stacken went 1@-E innings, while John Novicki, Bryce Zimmerer and Alex Homan all went one full inning each.

“Our plan was to go ahead with Carson and possibly spend him,” Diedrichsen said. “I didn't want to go any further with him with a sore arm. We ended up pulling him right then, so we needed to improvise a little bit.”

Tyler Vavrina took the win for David City, allowing one unearned run in throwing the first 2@-E innings. Kyle Napier went 2@-E, Matt Nadrchal lasted 1@-E and Nolan Hartman got a game-ending flyout. None threw more than Vavrina's 44 pitches due to the Legion's pitch-count rules.

Both of those hit batters came around to score for David City in the third for a 3-0 lead. Zimmerer answered for Creighton, reaching first and advancing to second on an error. Later, the David City catcher tried throwing Zimmerer out at third base for a strikeout-throwout double play, but the throw went wide, and Zimmerer scampered home.

David City bookended the fourth inning with big plays. Daniel Stara took the first pitch of the inning over the fence for a home run, and center fielder Andy Lyons ended it defensively with a running, diving catch in right-center that likely kept Creighton from scoring a run. From there, David City added three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

For David City, Hartman was 3 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored. Joseph Reimers was 2 for 4, was hit by a pitch, doubled and scored three runs. Vavrina was 1 for 2 with a walk, was hit by a pitch, and he scored two runs.

Five players had one hit each for Creighton, and Wyatt Diedrichsen walked three times.
