SPENCER — Services for John Thompson, 91, of Spencer will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the United Methodist Church in Spencer with the Rev. Ray Weinerman officiating. Burial will be in the in Union Cemetery in Spencer. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 78.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Brockhaus Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
He died Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.
1928-2019
John I. Thompson, son of George and Minnie (Christensen) Thompson, was born March 18, 1928, at Spencer. He attended Spencer Public School. After graduation, John joined the Merchant Marines and was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Donna Schuman on Sept. 25, 1949. They were blessed with three children, Elizabeth (Butch) in 1951, Brian (Janeil) in 1962 and Mark in 1966.
John drove truck for Louis Scheinost and Independent Produce. He also worked for the cheese factory in O’Neill and was a custodian at Spencer Public School.
After retiring, John and Donna enjoyed a few trips around the Midwest and to Las Vegas. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and family. John was a member of United Methodist Church in Spencer, Naper Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Masons of Nebraska.
John is survived by his children, Elizabeth Ekberg of Wakefield, Brian (Janeil) Thompson of Omaha and Mark Thompson of Lincoln; nine grandchildren, Kelly, Ryan, Suzann, Paige, Hillary, John Robert, Connor, Jaida and Lola; and one great-granddaughter, Tayley.
