Helen Grant


BATTLE CREEK — Services for Helen M. Grant, 94, of Battle Creek will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church with the Rev. Richard Snow officiating and burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday  at the church under the direction of Steffen Mortuary. 

She died Thursday, April 7, 2011, at Tilden Community Hospital.


Helen was born south of Battle Creek on Sept. 17, 1916, to John C. and Amelia (Schmidt) Volk, and was baptized Oct. 29, 1916, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Madison, and confirmed her faith May 11, 1930, at St. Peter's (Heights) Lutheran Church. She attended Fairview District 22 and Heights Lutheran School and was a graduate of Battle Creek High School with the class of 1934.

On June 21, 1936, at St. Peter's (Heights) Lutheran Church, Helen Volk and Willis Grant exchanged wedding vows. The couple lived south of Meadow Grove for 25 years, then moved to Battle Creek in 1961. To this union one son, Richard, and one daughter, Brenda, were born.

Helen was active in community affairs, including employment at the Madison County Extension Office. Her pride and joy were her flowers and gardening. She often shared her produce, flower arrangements and baked goods.

She was a member of St. John (Heights) Church, a member of Heights Ladies Guild for 52 years and was the first secretary of the District Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She was a charter member of the Sweet Sixteen Extension Club and the Goldenrod Club for over 67 years. Helen spent many years assisting with catering for wedding receptions. She had been a resident of Community Pride Care Center for the past five years.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and having family, friends and neighbors in her home and always offering refreshments.

Helen is survived by son Richard (Carol) of Meadow Grove and daughter Brenda Bierman (Warren) of Lexington; brothers John Volk, Jim (Stella) Volk, Bob (Jeanette) Volk; a sister, Betty Bierman, and a sister-in-law, Josephine Volk; grandchildren Bruce Grant (Karen), Kim McCain (Troy), Konnie McKown (Lane), Tammy Gregerson (Tim), Wendy Dockweiler (Doug), Debra Vahle (Daniel), Sheri Bierman; great-grandchildren Michala, Layton and Kalen Dockweiler, Garret and Katheryn Gregerson, Tucker and Noah Vahle, Jason, Jeremy, and Kristen Grant, Jake and Cody McCain, Grant and Jonathan McKown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Willis Grant in 1985 and a brother, Kenneth.

WISNER — Services for Geraldine Eggers, 96, Wisner, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church in rural Wisner. The Rev. Robert Mayes will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

OAKDALE — Services for Penny J. Buck, 68, Oakdale, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at the Oakdale Community Center in Oakdale. The Rev. Bruce Phillips will officiate with burial in Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale.

NORFOLK — Services for Francis J. Keil, 90, Norfolk, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, at Grace Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The Revs. Ray Wilke and Chris Asbury will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk.
