The Norfolk Fire Division responded to a car fire near fuel tanks at Alters in southeast Norfolk on Thursday, just after 6 p.m.

Lt. Scott Bonsall said first responders arrived to black smoke and moderate heat coming from four vehicles and a car crusher at 500 Washington Ave.

Eighteen firefighters and five fire trucks brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes, and it took another 30 minutes to overhaul the cars and crusher.

An undetermined amount of damage was done to the $75,000 crusher. The cars were still thought to be recyclable.

The property is owned and operated by Alter Trading Corp. No one was injured during the incident.

The Norfolk Police Division assisted at the scene, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
