Justin Bour delivered a two-run single on the first pitch he saw after replacing injured American League All-Star Tommy La Stella, and the grieving Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 9-4.  The emotional win came a day after the death of 27-year-old pitcher Tyler Skaggs.  He was found unresponsive in his room at the team's hotel before what was supposed to be the series opener Monday.

ESPN reports that Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott issued a statement about his meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday, saying he had made a poor decision in Las Vegas and needs to work harder to not put himself in such situations.  Elliott was briefly detained but not arrested in Las Vegas in May when a security guard fell to the ground after being bumped by the running back.  He was seen on video having an argument with his girlfriend when he turned his attention to the security guard.  In his statement, which he posted on social media, Elliott said, "Earlier today, I met with the Commissioner to share with him what occurred in Las Vegas and what I have learned from that incident. I've worked hard to make better decisions and to live up to the high standards that are expected of me. I failed to do that here and I made a poor decision.  Elliott is subject to a fine or suspension under the league's personal conduct policy, which does not require an arrest or conviction for a player to be penalized.

The United States squad is headed once again to the Women's World Cup final thanks to a 2-1 win over England yesterday.  Alex Morgan scored the go-ahead goal and Alyssa Naeher preserved the victory by smothering a late penalty kick.  The top-ranked Americans will now face the winner of today's semifinal between the Netherlands and Sweden.

Another elimination for Argentina, another missed opportunity for Lionel Messi to succeed with the national team.  Messi's streak without a title with Argentina has been extended after a 2-0 loss yesterday to Brazil in the semifinals of the Copa America.  Argentina's senior squad hasn't won a title in 26 years, with the last one coming when Messi was five years old.  The 32-year-old Messi complained about the refereeing, saying video review should have been used to check on a couple of non-calls that could have favored the Argentines with penalty kicks.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Blaise Gunnerson of Carroll, Iowa announced his verbal commitment to the Nebraska football team yesterday on Twitter, becoming the seventh in the Huskers’ 2020 class.  Gunnerson is listed at 6’5 and 250 pounds, and is likely capable of playing either outside linebacker spot in Erik Chinander’s defense.  Gunnerson missed his entire junior season due to a hip injury but showed enough during his sophomore campaign to draw extensive Power Five interest.  His most recent of four trips to NU in the past year came June 14-16, when he dominated a Friday Night Lights camp and then had his official visit.

The NJCAA announced that 31 Northeast Community College student-athletes earned All-Academic recognition.  Among the honorees on the First Team were Pierce’ Emily Simmons (Women’s Soccer), O’Neill’s Jared Hammerlun (Men’s Soccer) & Howells’ Kalli Brester (Volleyball).  Named to the Second Team were South Sioux City’s Kori Fischer & Burwell’s Blake Mann (Women’s Basketball), Spencer’s Caleb Rihanek (Men’s Basketball); & Fordyce’ Matthew Schaefer (Men’s Golf).  Among the honorees on the Third Team were Scribner’s Ben Moxness (Men’s Basketball), Howells’ Macey Kulhanek (Women’s Basketball), Randolph’s Mason Stubbs (Men’s Golf); Columbus’ Alexis Wemhoff & Emily Goc (Women’s Soccer), & Stanton’s Hannah Heppner (Volleyball).
