Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler have given the United States the first point of the Ryder Cup.  The Americans closed out the 4-and-2 victory over Rory McIlroy and Thorbjorn Olesen without even having to finish the par-3 16th.  With a huge crowd cheering on the Europeans at Le Golf National, Johnson stuck his tee shot about four feet from the flag.  After Olesen and McIlroy both missed longer birdie putts, the Europeans conceded the hole to close out the fourballs match.  The other three matches are coming right down to the wire.

The Norfolk Catholic cross country team competed in yesterday’s South Sioux City Invitational at Covington Links Golf Course.  In the boys’ race, Ralston was the champion with a score of 40 while the Knights were second with 50.  Sheldon’s Eric Heibult was the medalist in a time of 16:14.  He won by 24 seconds.  Norfolk Catholic’s Rylan Rasmussen placed eighth, Elliot Eisenmenger was twelfth, and Dalton Brunsing finished in 13th place.  In the girls’ competition, Ralston was the champion with a score of 29.  They won by five points.  The Lady Knights were fourth with a score of 74.  Pender’s Paige Steinman was the medalist in a time of 19:36.  She won by 32 seconds.  Norfolk Catholic was led by Emily Faltys’ fourth place finish.

The Norfolk High boys’ tennis squad was involved in yesterday’s Heartland Athletic Conference Championship in Lincoln.  Lincoln East & Lincoln Pius X tied for the championship with a score of 37.  The Panthers totaled only two points.  Tate Brudigan was 1-1 in #1 Singles.  Mason Borgman placed seventh in #2 Singles with a 3-2 record.  Colby Mrsny & Jared Ertzner Kitto finished 0-2 in #1 Doubles and Josh Schrader & Josh Sumner were 0-2 in #2 Doubles.

The Norfolk High girls’ golf squad hosted yesterday’s Heartland Athletic Conference Championship.  Lincoln Southwest was the champion after shooting 334.  They won by 28 strokes.  Norfolk finished seventh after a 415.  Lincoln Southwest’s Katie Strickland was the medalist after carding a 77.  She won by three strokes.  Kylie Blume led the Lady Panthers with a tenth place finish after a 92.

The Norfolk Catholic girls’ golf team participated in yesterday’s Mid State Conference Meet at Wayne Country Club.  Hartington Cedar Catholic was the champion after carding a 411.  The Lady Knights were the runner-up at 424.  Pierce’ Sydney Erickson was the medalist after shooting an 87.  Hartington Cedar Catholic’s Ireland Biltoft was the runner-up at 95.  Norfolk Catholic’s Anna Kassmeier was third after carding a 96 and Carly Thramer shot 101 to finish seventh.
