Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns have put an end to the team's 19-game winless streak by rallying from a 14-0 deficit to beat the New York Jets, 21-17. Mayfield came in for Tyrod Taylor late in the second quarter and was 17-23 for 201 yards and a reception on a two-point conversion. Carlos Hyde's second touchdown of the night put the Browns ahead with 2:04 to play.
Mookie Betts was 4-5 with a three-run homer, five RBIs and three runs scored as the Boston Red Sox rallied to beat the New York Yankees, 11-6 and clinch their third straight American League East title. Xander Bogaerts lifted a tiebreaking, sacrifice fly in the seventh that was thrown away by outfielder Aaron Hicks, allowing a second run to score. Jackie Bradley Jr. and Brock Holt also homered for the Red Sox, whose 104 victories is one off the team record set in 1912.
The Nebraska football team will play Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 27 to make up the game against Akron that was canceled because of inclement weather. The Wildcats are a Football Championship Subdivision team that's 1-2 after losing to Florida Atlantic last Saturday. Nebraska will pay Bethune-Cookman a guarantee of $800,000. The 0-2 Cornhuskers were supposed to open the season against Akron on Sept. 1, but the game was called off right after the opening kickoff because of severe storms in the Lincoln area. Akron and Nebraska tentatively agreed to reschedule the game for Dec. 1, but that date conflicts with conference championship games. Nebraska coach Scott Frost said last week he preferred to play on what originally was supposed to be an open date for the Huskers.
