STANTON - Ruby L. Benson, 85, of Stanton died Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at Stanton Health Center.
Services will be at New England Congregational United Church of Christ at 10:30 a.m. Friday with burial in the Stanton Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday at Shultz-Vogel-Johnson Mortuary. The Revs. Gail Axen and Mary Beth Cross will officiate with services by Order of Eastern Star Chapter 146.
Ruby Lucille Benson was born Jan. 8, 1924, at Jane, Mo., the daughter of Milton and Ethel (Dobbs) Dopp. She attended school through her junior year of high school at Stella High School at Stella, Mo., and graduated from high school in San Ramon, Calif. Ruby had moved to San Ramon to live with her sister. She babysat and worked at the cafe where her sister was employed.
Ruby married George Benson Sr. Aug. 17, 1941, at First Baptist Church in Reno, Nev. The couple both worked at the Bishop Ranch in San Ramon, Calif., until late 1941 when they moved to Stanton. The couple farmed south of Stanton for a number of years. Ruby worked at The Fountain Cafe and The Burger Shop in Stanton. She worked as bookkeeper at Benson Farm Service for five years and later at the Stanton Nursing Home for a number of years as a cook in the kitchen.
The couple moved into Stanton in 1982. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991 and their 60th at the Stanton Health Center in 2001
Ruby's hobbies and interests include her knitting, crocheting, playing with her grandchildren, playing cards, teaching the grandkids how to play baseball, raising a garden, canning and cooking. She was a member of New England Congregational United Church of Christ at Stanton, member of American Legion Post 88 Auxiliary of Stanton, member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 146 and the past matron of Stanton and member of Butterfly Homemakers.
Ruby's survivors include her four sons, George Jr. and Mary Benson of Stanton, Gary and LaVonne Benson of Stanton, Roger and Peggy Benson of Avoca, Iowa, Lonnie Benson of Stanton; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Beth Cisco of Buffalo, N.Y.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband George Sr. on Sept. 29, 2005; three sisters, Willa Dean Adkins, Mabel Henson and Donna Dopp; two brothers, a brother who died in infancy and Evelyn Dopp.
Music will be by organist Mary Benson.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren Kristin Zahnow, Brett Benson, Brian Benson, Rick Benson, Tamera Martin, Sue Ann Ashker, Doreen Schwarz, Jennifer Davis, Craig Benson, Katherine Benson and Elizabeth Benson.
