Monte Gehle

DESHLER — Services for Monte J. Gehle, 55, Chester, were Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler. The Revs. Dan Cloeter and Lee Hoops officiated.

Kroll Funeral Home of Hebron was in charge of the arrangements.

1964-2019

Monte Joel Gehle of Chester, son of Myron (Jim) Gehle and Marla (Jeanne) (Hoops) Braithwait, was born Feb. 19, 1964, in Belleville, Kan. He departed this life at his residence in rural Chester on Thursday, June 6, 2019, after battling cancer.

Monte grew up in Chester, where he also attended school and graduated from Chester-Hubbell High School with the class of 1982. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byron and was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester. He was a church member and served on church council at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byron, then at Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler.

Monte married Rita Nelson on Nov. 16, 1985, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Byron. This union was blessed with the birth of two children: Amanda Gehle and Brandon Gehle.

Monte was interested in farming from a young age. He enjoyed being outdoors and in God’s great creation. His persistence, solution-oriented mindset and ability to come up with, build and implement improvements and creative solutions served him well in farming and in life. He had many diverse skillsets which he put to use — often single-handedly — in order that equipment and processes be more efficient and easier to operate. It seemed as though he could do almost anything, even with one hand.

Monte was extremely grateful for and took care of what he had, especially his family and close friends. He enjoyed listening to music, spending time with loved ones and cherished time with his grandchildren. He was able to find the bright side, even amidst challenges and also encouraged others in this regard. While he was not one to tell others how they ought to live or do things, he had a heart for mentorship, which was shared with his children, with his farm hands, and while serving as a Peer Mentor for AgrAbility.

He is survived by his spouse, Rita (Nelson) Gehle of Chester; his daughter, Amanda Gehle of New York, N.Y.; his son, Brandon Gehle and friend Tonya Cruz of Chester; his grandchildren, Kailyn and Kinslie Gehle and Tatiana Cruz; his father, Myron (Connie) Gehle of Byron; his mother, Marla (Del) Braithwait of Hebron; his brother, Mylan Gehle (Becky) of Republic, Kan.; a brother, Michael Gehle (Tammy) of Hardy; a sister, Misty Gehle and companion Paul Fechtmeister of Laramie, Wyo.; his mother-in-law, Lorrainne D. Nelson, formerly of Newman Grove and Norfolk, now of Hebron; his brothers-in-law, Ricky Nelson (Roxanne) of Hastings, Randall Nelson (Robyn) of Scandia, Kan., and Russell Nelson of Norfolk; nieces; nephews and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Adolph and Lenora (Ahrens) Gehle; maternal grandparents, Edwin and Ruby (Meyer) Hoops and Hazel (Naysmith) Hoops; father-in-law Eugene T. Nelson; infant niece, Mickala Renee Gehle; and nephew Colton Jon Stensaas.

Casketbearers were Shelby Hergott, Jerry Wiedel, Tobe Duensing, Rob Kuhlmann, Scott Kuhlmann, Pete Oldehoft, Taylor Koss and Seth Gehle.

Memorials should be made in care of the family.

Obituary policy

The Daily News publishes death notices and obituaries on a daily basis for Norfolkans, area residents and former residents.

Death notices, which include information about when and where a person died, funeral services, burial and visitation for the deceased and memorial information, are published free of charge.

If families of the deceased desire to have an obituary printed, there is a fee charged for doing so. Because of that, families of the deceased can decide what information they want included in the obituary, as well as if they desire to have a photograph published along with it. The Daily News reserves the right to edit.

Norfolk and area funeral homes have detailed information about placing an obituary in the Daily News. If individuals want to submit obituary information themselves, it can be emailed to funerals@norfolkdailynews.com or faxed to (402) 644-2080.

People needing additional information about death notices and obituaries can call the Daily News at 371-1020 or (877) 371-1020 and ask for the newsroom.
