WISNER — Services for Darrell Bruning, 71, of Wisner will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church here with burial in the parish cemetery. Visitation at the church will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday, with family present after 5:30 p.m. and a 7 p.m. vigil service, and continue at 9 a.m. Monday. Minnick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Providence Medical Center.


Darrell George Bruning was born June 6, 1941, at Yankton, S.D., to Vincent and Evelyn (Suing) Bruning. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Philip and James Catholic Church at St. James. Darrell attended and graduated from Holy Trinity Catholic School in Hartington.

On Sept. 22, 1962, he was united in marriage to Nancy Giese at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. While living in Wayne, he worked for Roy Coryell Chevrolet.

The couple moved to Wisner, and Darrell was employed at Al Sundahl Chevrolet and later went to work for Einung Concrete and later was called Husker Concrete. After Husker Concrete was purchased by Gerhold Concrete, he worked in Columbus for approximately five years. He has operated Bruning Repair and Wrecker Service for the last several years. Darrell also delivered the Sunday Omaha World Herald for over 40 years.

Darrell was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Wisner Volunteer Fire Department. Darrell enjoyed bowling, golfing, shuffleboard and especially spending time with the grandchildren and wrecker calls.

Survivors include wife Nancy Bruning of Wisner; children and their families, Mike and wife Sandra Bruning of San Marino, Calif., and children Lauren, Allison and Nicole; Michelle and husband Mark Kreikemeier of Snyder and children Whitney Waterman, Tyson Waterman and fiancee Tamara; Kris and husband Dwight Brahmer of Wisner and children Alex, Andrew, Adam and Ashley; David and wife Susie Bruning of Lincoln and daughter Aubrey; Amy Bruning of Wisner; Anne and husband Gary McBride of Wisner and children Ryan, Tyler and Aidan; Keri Tienken of Omaha; brothers and sisters, Don and wife Carol Bruning of Hartington, Dorothy and husband Bob Haage of Mead, Jerry and wife Marlyce Bruning of Coleridge, Chuck Bruning of Hartington, Carol Ann Wortmann of Hartington.

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, brothers — one in infancy and Jim — and a brother-in-law, Dave Wortmann.

Death notices, which include information about when and where a person died, funeral services, burial and visitation for the deceased and memorial information, are published free of charge.

If families of the deceased desire to have an obituary printed, there is a fee charged for doing so. Because of that, families of the deceased can decide what information they want included in the obituary, as well as if they desire to have a photograph published along with it.
