The two dormitories and two apartment buildings on Northeast Community College’s campus are full.
And there’s a waiting list.
So where are the new University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) nursing students going to live?
Well, the simple answer is — not on campus, said Jackie Smith, student services coordinator for the new UNMC nursing college.
There are 32 students enrolled in UNMC’s traditional track, starting in the fall, she said.
About half are from Norfolk or the area and won’t need to find housing, Smith said.
Other students are looking for off-campus options. Students have been told to look in the newspaper for rentals or, for a fee, college officials will give them access to a list of properties willing to rent to students.
The college can also match up a student with a roommate — even one that’s in their same field of study if that’s desirable.
Smith said she’s told students to call her with questions or let her know if they get stuck in finding a place to live.
“
So far nobody’s said, ‘I have nowhere to live.’ I hope they’re OK. At this point, I don’t hear any major panic,” Smith said.
The UNMC program at Northeast starts Aug. 23 and Northeast starts classes a week before that.
The two residence halls and the two apartment facilities can house up to 345 students on campus.
“We’ll have to see what happens in the future,” said Pete Rizzo, director of resident and student life at Northeast. “We want to do our best to house any nursing students we have.”

My daughter is one of the nursing students and we currently live in Bellevue, NE. She found a nice apartment at the Kensington on 4th Street. I am sure they have others avaiable.
