While the tech isn't yet perfected, experts still believe hackers could soon figure out your PINs and other sensitive info by listening to what you're typing -- through your device's microphone or other built-in sensors.

According to a study from the University of Cambridge in England and Sweden's Linköping University, detailed in The Wall Street Journal, researchers acting as hackers employed an algorithm that could crack passwords by listening to the timing between key taps via the device's microphone, or by using the devices' gyroscopic sensors to detect the finger vibrations.

The algorithm was able to divine seven out of 27 passwords on a smartphone, and 19 out of 27 passwords on a tablet, in just 10 tries.

While the researchers note that many apps ask permission to use microphones, the accelerometer -- the gyroscopic sensor that let you swipe, shake, and track your steps through your phone -- usually isn't so protected and "could be used to steal data in a more discreet fashion."

The researchers say such tech is currently out of reach for your average hacker and isn't always reliable, but improvements in technology could make this a danger in the future.
