Some families have holiday traditions they do every year — like waking up at the crack of dawn to open presents or inviting an Elf on the Shelf to make sure the kids are behaving. My family has traditions that we try to do every year. I enjoy my traditions because I get to make memories and spend time with my family.
Sometime around the end of November and the beginning of December, we take down fall decorations and put up winter decor. This is a very fun time in my house because as long as I can remember, I have fun memories of helping with this. I still remember setting up the Lego train track around the tree and arranging the Christmas-themed Russian nesting dolls on the shelf in the living room.
I always assign myself the task of divvying up ornaments to hang on the tree. I make sure my siblings and I have an equal number of ornaments so it’s fair for everyone.
My family doesn’t start getting in the Christmas spirit too early. We wait until after Thanksgiving. But we do leave our decorations up until January and don’t take our tree down until Epiphany.
During this time, my family also starts listening to Christmas music. Last year on the 1st of December, I switched my radio to a 24/7 Christmas station and tried to listen to it every day. I think I memorized the verses of every Christmas song there is. This challenge proved to be too much and I finally needed to listen to something else.
I enjoy singing carols and listening to the hymns during my church’s Christmas Eve service that my family attends every year. Also on the 24th, my parents make a soup dinner that we enjoy with my grandparents, aunts and uncles. To finish the night, we each open a present before we go to bed.
On Christmas morning, my family opens presents throughout the day and eats brunch sometimes during that process. After that, we play games and enjoy our new gifts.
I look forward to spending time with my family every year while participating in our traditions. I’ve kept these customs every year so I’m not sure what will change when I go to college. I know I will still look forward every year to my traditions and spending time with the people I love.
